The session is divided into two separate parts. In the first part, Bernd R\u00fcschoff will contextualize the issue of AI in language education from a CoE policy, CEFR-CV framework, and action-oriented, plurilingualism & social agency grounded perspective. This part will reflect on the ethical considerations as well as practical implications of using AI in language education as a key factor to foster social agency as well as plurilingual dispositions in learners and enhance action-oriented scenarios in learning and teaching. A few practical examples will be presented to show how AI works\/might work in language learning in practical terms. Following this, participants will be invited to briefly share their own experiences and concerns vis-\u00e0-vis AI and its potential role in language education.\r\n\r\nIn the second part, Evelina Jaleniauskiene briefly discusses the challenges that AI currently poses to language education. She will then focus on the potential of integrating AI into an action-oriented approach, beginning with a brief overview of major LLMs, followed by examples of how they can be used to facilitate both the creation and implementation of tasks. These examples will be drawn from an action-oriented scenario recently implemented in a university setting. After this, you will be invited to co-create a shared list of key takeaways related to the use of LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot) or any other AI-powered tools regarding any aspect (e.g., pedagogical impact, workload) that might help us gain a deeper understanding of the use of AI in language education. You may wish to list your ideas in advance HERE.\r\n\r\nBios\r\nBernd R\u00fcschoff is Senior Professor (ret.) and former Chair in EFL Didactics and Applied Linguistics at Duisburg-Essen University in Germany. His research focus is in EFL methodology, applied linguistics and second language acquisition as well as Technology Enhanced Language Learning (TELL). He has wide experience in researching technology enhanced learning systems and their integration into language learning. He has been involved in numerous international projects and contributed to a large number of Council of Europe activities. He is a former president of EUROCALL, of the German Association of Applied Linguistics, and of AILA. He was a member of the Council of Europe\u2019s CEFR Expert Group, which coordinated the implementation of the CEFR Companion Volume and was also part of the team that conducted a survey on the Future of language education in the light of Covid: lessons learned and ways forward on behalf of the ECML. \r\n\r\nEvelina Jaleniauskiene is Associate Professor at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania. She is a member of the research group on Language and Technologies at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. Her current research interests lie in technology-enhanced language teaching, the action-oriented approach, project-based language learning, re-envisioning foreign language education and development of the 21st-century skills in higher education. Her latest research interests include the use of diversified multimodal learning artifacts and AI-powered tools in language education.
